Pharmacology

  • Dopamine antagonist
  • Blocks dopamine receptors in the Chemoreceptor Trigger Zone (CTZ)
  • Gastroprokinetic action
  • Restores normal motility and tone of the upper gastrointestinal tract
  • Facilitates gastric emptying
  • Enhances antral and duodenal peristalsis
  • Regulates contraction of the pylorus
  • Increases esophageal peristalsis
  • Regulates lower esophageal sphincter pressure

Dosage & Administration

  • Should be taken 15-30 minutes before meals
  • Adult dose: 10-20 mg every 6-8 hours daily
  • Maximum adult dose: 80 mg daily
  • Children's dose based on body weight

Interaction

  • Caution in the case of children
  • Increased risk of extra-pyramidal reactions in young children
  • Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment
