Indications
- Treatment of urinary tract infection
- Susceptible Gram-negative organisms
- Proteus species
- Klebsiella species
- Enterobacter species
- Escherichia coli
Pharmacology
- Synthetic narrow spectrum antibacterial
- Bacteriostatic or bactericidal
- Inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis
- Interferes with DNA polymerization
- Rapid and complete absorption from G.I. Tract
- Distribution to most tissues
- Rapid and almost complete excretion within 24 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: initially 1g every 6 hours for 7 days reducing to 500 mg every 6 hours
- Children dosage: Oral 13.75 mg per kg body weight every six hours for one or two weeks
Interaction
- Concomitant use with melphalan
- Reports of death from severe blood-containing diarrhoea caused by hemorrhagic ulcerative colitis
- Probenecid inhibits tubular secretion and may elevate serum concentration
- Potentiation of effect by Chlorpromazine and Perphenazine

- Infants under 3 months

- CNS lesions
