Indications
- Treatment of urinary tract infection
- Susceptible Gram-negative organisms
- Proteus species
- Klebsiella species
- Enterobacter species
- Escherichia coli
Pharmacology
- Narrow spectrum antibacterial
- Bacteriostatic or bactericidal
- Inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis
- Interferes with DNA polymerization
- Rapid and complete absorption from the G.I. Tract
- Distribution to most tissues especially to the kidney and urine
- Short half-life under normal renal function
- Extended half-life with impaired renal function
- Rapid and complete excretion within 24 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dosage for adults: 1g every 6 hours for 7 days
- Reduced adult dosage: 500mg every 6 hours
- Children's dosage: based on body weight
- Infants and children 3 months of age and over initial dosage: 13.75mg per kg every six hours
- Maintenance dosage for children: 8.25mg per kg every six hours
Interaction
- Concomitant use with melphalan may cause severe blood-containing diarrhea
- Potential elevation of serum concentration with probenecid co-administration
- Potentiation of effect with chlorpromazine and perphenazine co-administration

- Infants under 3 months

- CNS lesions
