Indications
- Treatment of urinary tract infection caused by susceptible Gram-negative organisms
Pharmacology
- Synthetic narrow spectrum antibacterial
- Bacteriostatic or bactericidal
- Inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis
- Rapidly and completely absorbed from the G.I. tract
- Distributed to most tissues, especially to the kidney and urine
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 g every 6 hours for 7 days, reducing to 500 mg every 6 hours
- Children dosage: Initial oral doses based on body weight, maintenance doses as prescribed
Interaction
- Concomitant use with melphalan may cause severe blood-containing diarrhea
- Probenecid may elevate serum concentration, enhancing toxicity
- Chlorpromazine and perphenazine may potentiate the effect of Nalid
Contraindications
- Infants under 3 months
- Epilepsy
- CNS lesions

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Possibility of causing cartilage and DNA damage
- Excreted in breast milk
- Report of hemolytic anemia in a breastfed child of an azotemic mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Consider risk-benefit during the first trimester of pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Impaired renal or hepatic function
