Nalitrum 300 mg/5 ml (Oral Suspension)

Indications

• Treatment of urinary tract infection caused by susceptible Gram-negative organisms

Pharmacology

• Synthetic narrow-spectrum antibacterial
• Inhibition of bacterial DNA synthesis
• Rapid and complete absorption from the GI tract
• Distribution to most tissues, especially to the kidney and urine
• Excretion within 24 hours

Dosage & Administration

• Initial dosage of 1g every 6 hours for adults
• Reduced dosage of 500mg every 6 hours for adults
• Dosing for infants and children based on body weight

Interaction

• Contraindications with melphalan leading to severe blood-containing diarrhea
• Probenecid inhibition of tubular secretion and elevation of serum concentration
• Potentiation effect with chlorpromazine and perphenazine

Contraindications

• Infants under 3 months
• Epilepsy
• CNS lesions

Side Effects

• Gastrointestinal disturbances including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
• Haemolysis in G6PD deficiency
• Allergic reactions such as urticaria, rashes, and fever
• Muscle weakness, phototoxicity, jaundice, visual disturbances, and convulsions

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Possibility of causing cartilage and DNA damage
• Excretion in breast milk
• Risk-benefit consideration during the first trimester of pregnancy and breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

• Risk-benefit consideration during impaired renal or hepatic function
