Indications

  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Prophylaxis of urinary tract infections
  • Effective against Escherichia coli
  • Effective against Enterococci
  • Effective against Staphylococcus aureus
  • Effective against Staphylococcus saprophyticus
  • Effective against Klebsiella species
  • Effective against Enterobacter species

Pharmacology

  • Highly soluble in urine
  • Imparts a brown color to urine
  • Inactivates or alters bacterial ribosomal proteins
  • Shown to be active against Gram-Positive Aerobes
  • Shown to be active against Gram-Negative Aerobes

Dosage

  • Adult tablet dosage: 50-100 mg four times a day
  • Long-term suppressive therapy for adults
  • Acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections dosage: 50 mg four times daily for 7 days
  • Prophylactic dosage for adults
  • Dosage for genito-urinary surgical prophylaxis
  • Pediatric dosage for Nintoin suspension

Administration

  • Should be taken with food

Interaction

  • Reduces absorption when administered with Antacids containing Magnesium Trisilicate
  • Can inhibit renal tubular secretion of Nintoin when used with Uricosuric drugs like Probenecid and Sulfinpyrazone

Contraindications

  • Anuria
  • Oliguria
  • Significant impairment of renal function
  • Pregnancy at 38-42 weeks, during labor and delivery
  • Known hypersensitivity to Nitrofurantoin

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category B

  • Detected in human breast milk in trace amounts
  • Potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants under one month of age

Precautions & Warnings

  • Discontinue if pulmonary reactions occur
  • Avoid antacid preparations containing magnesium trisilicate

Overdose Effects

  • No specific symptoms other than vomiting reported in acute overdosage incidents
  • Induction of emesis recommended
