Description
- A stable and pleasant-tasting oral systemic alkalizer
- Highly palatable and tolerable for long-term use
- Does not neutralize gastric juice or disturb digestion
Indications
- Relief of discomfort in urinary tract infections
- Prevention of kidney stones
- Prevention of gout when used with uricosuric agent
- Treatment of acidosis caused by kidney diseases
Pharmacology
- Potassium Citrate and Citric Acid oral solution
- Metabolizes to Potassium Bicarbonate
- Alkalinizes urine without producing systemic alkalosis
Dosage & Administration
- Adults over 6 years: 10 ml 3 times daily, diluted with water
- Children 1-6 years: 5 ml 3 times daily, diluted with water
- Adults for kidney stones/gout/acidosis: 10-15 ml 4 times daily, diluted with water
- Pediatric for kidney stones/gout/acidosis: 5-10 ml 4 times daily, diluted with water
Interaction
- Concurrent administration with potassium-containing medication may lead to toxicity
- Caution with potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and cardiac glycosides
Contraindications
- Severe renal impairment with oliguria or azotemia
- Untreated Addison's disease
- Acute dehydration
- Severe myocardial damage
- Hyperkalemia from any cause
Side Effects
- Well tolerated in patients with normal renal function
- Caution needed in patients with abnormal renal mechanisms to avoid hyperkalemia or alkalosis

Precautions & Warnings

Overdose Effects
- Rarely causes serious hyperkalemia in persons with normal potassium excretory mechanisms
- Treatment measures including elimination of potassium sources, dextrose solution with insulin, and dialysis if hyperkalemia occurs
