Indications

Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Pharmacology

Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
Improvement in urine flow rate
Reduction in symptoms of BPH
Absorption of Tamsulosin hydrochloride capsule
Metabolized by cytochrome P 450 enzymes
Excretion in urine as unchanged form
Elimination half-life of Tamsulosin hydrochloride in plasma

Dosage & Administration

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg daily
Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.8 mg once daily
Administration after meal at night
Swallow whole with a glass of water
Do not crunched or chewed

Interaction

Concurrent administration of other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists
No interactions with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine
Interactions with cimetidine and frusemide
No interactions at the level of hepatic metabolism
Increase in elimination rate with diclofenac and warfarin

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin hydrochloride
History of orthostatic hypotension
Severe hepatic insufficiency
Reduction in blood pressure can occur
Syncope can occur
Examination before therapy initiation

Headache
Asthenia
Postural hypotension
Palpitations

Use not recommended

Transient postural symptoms may occur
Use in patients with micturition syncope not advised
Effects on ability to drive and use machines

Overdose Effects

Acute hypotension likely to occur
Cardiovascular support should be given
Renal function should be monitored
General supportive measures applied
Measures to impede absorption
Gastric lavage and activated charcoal administration
