Indications

  • Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Pharmacology

  • Tamsulosin is a selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
  • Improvement in urine flow rate and reduction in BPH symptoms
  • Absorption is essentially complete (90%) following oral administration under fasting conditions
  • Extensively metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver

Dosage & Administration

  • Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily, to be taken after a meal at night
  • Dose may be increased after 2 to 4 weeks if necessary
  • Capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, should not be crunched or chewed

Interaction

  • Concurrent administration of other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
  • No interactions seen with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine when given concomitantly with Sasolin MR
  • Concomitant cimetidine brings about a rise and frusemide a fall in plasma levels of Sasolin MR

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to tamsulosin hydrochloride
  • History of orthostatic hypotension
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency
  • Reduction in blood pressure can occur, leading to syncope

  • Dizziness
  • Abnormal ejaculation
  • Headache
  • Asthenia
  • Postural hypotension
  • Palpitations

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use not recommended during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Transient postural symptoms have occurred during orthostatic provocation testing after the first dose
  • Use in patients with micturition syncope is not advised
  • Patients should be aware that dizziness can occur

Overdose Effects

  • Acute hypotension likely to occur after overdosage
  • Cardiovascular support should be given
  • Renal function should be monitored and general supportive measures applied
  • Measures such as emesis, gastric lavage, and administration of activated charcoal can be taken to impede absorption
