Indications
- Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Pharmacology
- Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
- Relaxes smooth muscle in the bladder neck and prostate
- Improves urine flow rate
- Reduces symptoms of BPH
- Complete absorption (90%) under fasting conditions
- High plasma protein binding (94% to 99%)
- Extensive metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes
- Elimination half-life ranges from five to seven hours
- Apparent half-life of approximately 9 to 15 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily
- To be taken after meal at night
- Dose may be increased to 0.8 mg once daily if necessary
- Capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water
- Should not be crunched or chewed
Interaction
- Concurrent administration with other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
- No interactions seen with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine
- Concomitant cimetidine raises plasma levels, frusemide lowers plasma levels
- No interactions at the level of hepatic metabolism seen during in vitro studies
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin hydrochloride
- History of orthostatic hypotension
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Reduction in blood pressure can occur
- Caution with orthostatic hypotension
- Patient examination is advised before therapy initiation

- Dizziness
- Abnormal ejaculation
- Headache
- Asthenia
- Postural hypotension
- Palpitations
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use
Precautions & Warnings
- Transient postural symptoms may occur
- Use in patients with micturition syncope not advised
- Effects on ability to drive and use machines uncertain
- Patients should be aware of the potential for dizziness
Overdose Effects
- No reported cases of acute overdosage
- Acute hypotension likely in case of overdosage
- Cardiovascular support should be given
- Volume expanders and vasopressors may be required
- Renal function should be monitored
- General supportive measures should be applied
- Gastric lavage and administration of activated charcoal and osmotic laxative may be necessary
