Indications
- Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Pharmacology
- Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
- Relaxes smooth muscle in bladder neck and prostate
- Improves urine flow rate
- Reduces symptoms of BPH
- Complete absorption (90%) following oral administration under fasting conditions
- Highly bound to human plasma protein (94% to 99%)
- Extensively metabolized by liver enzymes
- Elimination half-life ranges from five to seven hours
- Absorption rate controlled pharmacokinetics
- Apparent half-life approximately 9 to 15 hours
Dosage & Administration
- 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily, to be taken after meal at night
- Dose may be increased to 0.8 mg (two capsules) once daily after 2 to 4 weeks
- Capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water
- Should not be crunched or chewed
Interaction
- Concurrent administration of other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
- No interactions seen with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine
- Cimetidine raises and frusemide lowers plasma levels of Tamlosin
- No interactions at the level of hepatic metabolism with certain drugs
- Diclofenac and warfarin may increase the elimination rate of Tamlosin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin hydrochloride
- History of orthostatic hypotension
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Possible reduction in blood pressure
- Caution advised to avoid activities where injury could result
- Examination and testing recommended before therapy is initiated

- Postural hypotension
- Palpitations
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Rare transient postural symptoms observed
- Use not advised in patients with micturition syncope
- Dizziness may occur
- Effects on ability to drive and use machines uncertain
Overdose Effects
- Acute hypotension likely after overdosage
- Cardiovascular support recommended
- Renal function monitoring and general supportive measures
- Dialysis unlikely to be helpful
- Measures such as emesis and gastric lavage may be taken to impede absorption
