Indications

  • Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Pharmacology

  • Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
  • Relaxation of smooth muscle in the bladder neck and prostate
  • Improvement in urine flow rate
  • Reduction in symptoms of BPH
  • Absorption of 90% under fasting conditions
  • Metabolized by cytochrome P 450 enzymes
  • Extensive plasma protein binding of 94% to 99%
  • Elimination half-life ranges from five to seven hours

Dosage & Administration

  • Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily
  • Increased to Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.8 mg (two capsules) once daily if necessary
  • Swallow whole with a glass of water
  • Not to be crunched or chewed

Interaction

  • Concurrent administration with other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists might cause hypotensive effects
  • No interactions seen with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine
  • Cimetidine may raise plasma levels of Urosin
  • Frusemide may lower plasma levels of Urosin
  • No interactions at the level of hepatic metabolism seen during in vitro studies with certain drugs

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin hydrochloride
  • History of orthostatic hypotension
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency
  • Potential reduction in blood pressure during treatment
  • Patient should avoid situations where injury could result
  • Examination to exclude other conditions with similar symptoms
  • Digital rectal examination and determination of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) should be performed

  • Headache
  • Asthenia
  • Postural hypotension
  • Palpitations

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use

Precautions & Warnings

  • Rare occurrence of transient postural symptoms
  • Use not advised in patients with micturition syncope
  • No data available on its effects on driving or operating machines
  • Patients should be aware of the possibility of dizziness

Overdose Effects

  • Acute hypotension likely to occur after overdosage
  • Cardiovascular support should be given
  • Blood pressure can be restored by lying the patient down
  • Volume expanders and vasopressors could be employed if necessary
  • Renal function should be monitored
  • General supportive measures should be applied
  • Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be used in large overdosage cases
