Indications

  • Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Pharmacology

  • Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
  • Improves urine flow rate
  • Reduces symptoms of BPH
  • 90% absorption following oral administration under fasting conditions
  • Extensively metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes
  • High plasma protein binding (94% to 99%)
  • Elimination half-life in plasma ranges from five to seven hours

Dosage & Administration

  • Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily
  • May be increased to 0.8 mg once daily after 2 to 4 weeks
  • To be taken after meal at night
  • Swallow whole with a glass of water

Interaction

  • No interactions with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine
  • Concurrent administration of other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
  • Rise in plasma levels with cimetidine, fall with frusemide

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin hydrochloride
  • History of orthostatic hypotension
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency
