Indications
- Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Pharmacology
- Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
- Relaxation of smooth muscles in the bladder neck and prostate
- Improvement in urine flow rate
- Reduction in symptoms of BPH
- High absorption rate (90%) under fasting conditions
- Time to maximum concentration (Tmax) reached by 4-7 hours
- Extensive metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver
- Plasma protein binding rate of 94% to 99%
- Elimination half-life of 5 to 7 hours
- Apparent half-life of 9 to 15 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily
- Increased dose of Tamsulosin Hydrochloride to 0.8 mg (two capsules) once daily after 2 to 4 weeks if necessary
- Administration after meal at night
- Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water
- Do not crush or chew the capsule
Interaction
- Possible hypotensive effects with concurrent administration of other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists
- No interactions with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine observed
- Cimetidine may raise plasma levels while frusemide may lower plasma levels
- Interactions with diclofenac and warfarin leading to increased elimination rate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin hydrochloride
- History of orthostatic hypotension
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Potential reduction in blood pressure leading to syncope

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Rare occurrence of transient postural symptoms during orthostatic provocation testing
- Avoid use in patients with micturition syncope
- Unknown effect on ability to drive or operate machines
- Patients should be cautious of potential dizziness

- Cardiovascular support may be necessary
- Monitoring of renal function
- General supportive measures
- Potential use of volume expanders and vasopressors
- Emesis, gastric lavage, and activated charcoal may impede absorption
