Indications
- Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Pharmacology
- Tamsulosin is a selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
- Causes relaxation of smooth muscles in the bladder neck and prostate
- Improves urine flow rate and reduces BPH symptoms
- Highly bound to human plasma protein (94% to 99%)
- Metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver
- Elimination half-life in plasma ranges from five to fifteen hours
Dosage & Administration
- 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily, to be taken after meal at night
- Dose may be increased to 0.8 mg (two capsules) once daily if necessary
- Should be swallowed whole with a glass of water
- Avoid crunching or chewing the capsule
Interaction
- Concurrent administration of alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonists may lead to hypotensive effects
- No interactions seen with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine
- Cimetidine may increase plasma levels of Tamsulosin
- Diclofenac and warfarin may increase elimination rate of Tamsulosin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin
- History of orthostatic hypotension
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Caution in patients with micturition syncope
- Reduction in blood pressure can occur, leading to syncope
- Avoid situations where injury could result
- Examination to exclude other conditions with similar symptoms as BPH
- Digital rectal examination and PSA determination before and during treatment

- Asthenia
- Postural hypotension
- Palpitations
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Rare occurrence of transient postural symptoms
- Use in patients with micturition syncope not advised
- Effects on ability to drive and operate machines
- Dizziness can occur
Overdose Effects
- Acute hypotension likely after overdose
- Cardiovascular support should be given
- Monitoring of renal function and general supportive measures
- Emesis and gastric lavage in case of large overdose
