Povisep 10% w/w (Vaginal Gel)

Indications

• Primary or secondary topical infections
• Infected surgical incisions
• Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
• Pyodermas
• Secondarily infected dermatoses
• Infected traumatic lesions
• Preventing microbial contaminations in burns
• Degerming skin in hyperalimentation
• Preventing infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
• Treatment of surface infections
• Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipments
• Preoperative prepping of operative site
• Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
• Prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital & office procedures
• Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
• Treatment of oral moniliasis (thrush), bacterial and mycotic skin infections, decubitus & stasis ulcers
• Preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
• Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
• Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
• Antiseptic skin cleanser for preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing by surgeons and operation theatre staff
• Topical application for superficial wounds, minor cuts, burns, abrasions, and lacerations
• Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
• Substitute for tear fluid in case of unstable tear film or insufficient moistening of the eye surface

Pharmacology

• Complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone
• Prolongs the germicidal activity of iodine by liberating elemental iodine slowly
• Rapid microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
• Sporicidal
• Non-staining
• Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water

Dosage & Administration

• Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily or at dressing changes for a maximum of 14 days
• Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary for prevention of infection
• Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
• Gargle & Mouthwash: Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water and gargle or rinse
• Gargle & Mouthwash: Use up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds for adults and children over 6 years of age
• Surgical Scrub: Wet hands and forearms with water, then apply and rub the scrub thoroughly for about five minutes

Interaction

• Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
• Concurrent lithium therapy has been shown to exhibit hypothyroidic effect

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity reactions
• Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy
• Severely burnt patients with possible hepatic and renal impairment
• Not to be used in serious cavities and in children under the age of 2 years

Side Effects

• Hypersensitivity reactions
• Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
• Systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, and impairment of renal function
• Interference with thyroid function tests

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the possibility of iodine absorption affecting the fetal thyroid
• Usually compatible with breastfeeding as per the American Academy of Pediatrics
• Pregnant and lactating women should avoid regular use of Gargle & Mouthwash and Surgical Scrub
• No experience regarding the safety of the Povidone eye drops in human pregnancy or lactation

Precautions & Warnings

• In case of deep or puncture wounds or serious burns, consult Registered Physician
• Avoid prolonged exposure to wet solution
• Regular use of Gargle & Mouthwash should be avoided as it may lead to the absorption of a significant amount of iodine
• Special caution for broken skin and patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
• Contact lenses should not be worn during the instillation of the ophthalmic solution
• Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity

• Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light
• Keep out of the reach of children
• Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
