Dosage and Administration

  • 200 mg 5 times daily for 5 days for initial herpes simplex
  • 400 mg 5 times daily for 5 days for immunocompromised patients (longer if new lesions appear during treatment or if healing is incomplete; increase dose to 800 mg 5 times daily for genital herpes in immunocompromised)
  • 200 mg 4 times daily or 400 mg twice daily for prevention of recurrence of herpes simplex
  • 200 to 400 mg 4 times daily for prophylactic treatment of herpes simplex in immunocompromised patients
  • 800 mg 4 times daily for 5 days for chicken pox in adults and children over 40 kg
  • 20 mg/kg (maximum 800 mg) per dose orally 4 times daily for 5 days for children below 40 kg
  • 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days for herpes zoster (shingles)
  • 400 mg 5 times daily for 10 days for initial rectal (proctitis) herpes infections
  • Dosage adjustment for severe renal impairment

Interaction

  • Probenecid reduces Aciclovir excretion and increases plasma concentration and risk of toxicity
