Indications
- Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of certain organisms
Pharmacology
- Antibacterial action resulting from inhibition of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
Interaction
- Elevation of plasma concentrations of theophylline
- Interference with the metabolism of caffeine
- Enhancement of the effects of the oral anticoagulant warfarin and its derivatives
- Transient elevations in serum creatinine in patients receiving systemic cyclosporine concomitantly
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Gatifloxacin or other quinolones
- Should not be injected subconjunctivally or introduced directly into the anterior chamber of the eye
Side Effects
- Frequently reported adverse events: conjunctival irritation, increased lacrimation etc.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category C drug during pregnancy
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Patients should not wear contact lenses if they have signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis
- Avoid contaminating the applicator tip
Use in Special Populations
- No overall differences in safety or effectiveness observed between elderly and younger patients

- An overdose is unlikely to threaten life
