Indications
- Treatment of fungal blepharitis
- Treatment of conjunctivitis
- Treatment of keratitis caused by susceptible organisms including Fusarium solani keratitis
Pharmacology
- Tetraene polyene antibiotic derived from Streptomyces natalensis
- Binds to sterols in the fungal cell membrane
- Produces a change in membrane permeability
- Possesses in vitro activity against a variety of yeast and filamentous fungi
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dosage: 1 drop instilled in the conjunctival sac at 1-2 hours interval for fungal keratitis
- Frequency of application can usually be reduced to 1 drop 6-8 times daily after the first 3-4 days for fungal keratitis
- Pediatric use safety and effectiveness not established
Interaction
- May increase spread of fungal eye infection when used with topical corticosteroid
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its component
Side Effects
- Eye irritation
- Eye discomfort
- Eye edema
- Conjunctival chemosis
- Hyperemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C
- Not known whether it can cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Do not touch dropper tip to any surface
- Patient advised not to wear contact lenses if they have signs and symptoms of fungal blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis
- Therapy continuation based on clinical re-evaluation
