Indications

  • Treatment of fungal blepharitis
  • Treatment of conjunctivitis
  • Treatment of keratitis caused by susceptible organisms
  • Treatment of Fusarium solani keratitis

Pharmacology

  • Tetraene polyene antibiotic
  • Derived from Streptomyces natalensis
  • Binds to sterols in fungal cell membrane
  • Causes change in membrane permeability
  • Possesses in vitro activity against yeast and filamentous fungi
  • Predominantly fungicidal

Dosage & Administration

  • Preferred initial dosage of 1 drop
  • Frequency of application can be reduced after 3-4 days
  • Therapy duration of 14 to 21 days
  • Specific dosages for fungal keratitis, blepharitis, and conjunctivitis
  • Pediatric use not established

Interaction

  • May increase spread of fungal eye infection when used with topical corticosteroid

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to any component

Precautions & Warnings

  • Do not touch dropper tip to any surface
  • Caution regarding contact lens use
  • Failure of improvement after 7-10 days may indicate non-susceptible organism
  • Adherence of the suspension to areas of epithelial ulceration
  • Retaining the suspension in the fornices
