Indications
- Short-term treatment of inflammatory conditions of the eye
- Treatment of non-infected inflammatory conditions of the ear or nose
Pharmacology
- Corticosteroids binding to the glucocorticoid receptor
- Inhibition of pro-inflammatory signals
- Promotion of anti-inflammatory signals
- Rapid hydrolysis of betamethasone phosphate to betamethasone
- Wide therapeutic window
Dosage & Administration
- 1-2 drops to each affected eye every 1-2 hours
- 2-3 drops to each affected ear every 2-3 hours
- 2-3 drops to each nostril 2-3 times daily
Interaction
- Specific drug interaction studies not conducted
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions leading to irritation, burning, stinging, itching and dermatitis
- Corneal ulceration
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Reduced visual acuity
- Formation of posterior subcapsular cataracts
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies for pregnant women
- Not extensively used in pregnant women
- Unknown secretion in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid giving for an undiagnosed red eye
- Regular review to exclude raised intraocular pressure, cataract formation, or unsuspected infections
Overdose Effects
- Long-term intensive use may lead to systemic effects
