Indications

Pharmacology
- Corticosteroids bind to the glucocorticoid receptor
- Inhibits pro-inflammatory signals
- Promotes anti-inflammatory signals

Dosage & Administration
- Administration via drops
- Frequency of administration based on control achieved
- Eye: 1 or 2 drops every 1 or 2 hours
- Ear: 2 or 3 drops every 2 or 3 hours
- Nose: 2 or 3 drops 2 or 3 times daily

Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions including irritation, burning, stinging, itching, dermatitis
- Corneal ulceration
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Optic nerve damage
- Reduced visual acuity
- Posterior subcapsular cataracts
- Thinning of the cornea or sclera
- Formation of posterior subcapsular cataracts
- Thinning of the globe
- Perforation of the globe
- Mydriasis
- Ptosis
- Epithelial punctate keratitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies for pregnant women
- Should not be used extensively in pregnant women
- Unknown whether it is secreted in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not to be given for an undiagnosed red eye
- Ophthalmic treatment not to be repeated or prolonged without regular review
- Exclude raised intraocular pressure
- Exclude cataract formation
- Exclude unsuspected infections

- Long-term intensive topical use may lead to systemic effects
