Indications

Treatment of allergic non-infectious blepharitis and conjunctivitis
Non-infectious keratitis and punctate keratitis
Inflammation of the anterior uvea (iritis, iridocyclitis)
Scleritis, episcleritis, and myositis
Post-operative management of cataract, strabismus & other ocular surgeries

Pharmacology

Dexamethasone is a cortisone derivative with high anti-inflammatory activity
Anti-allergic, anti-exudative, and anti-proliferative
Inhibits phospholipase A2 and prostaglandin synthesis
Inhibits chemotactic infiltration of neutrophils into the site of inflammation

Dosage & Administration

Instill 1 drop into the conjunctival sac 3-5 times per day for ophthalmic solution
Apply a small amount into the conjunctival sac 3-4 times per day for ophthalmic ointment
Minimize the dose when desired improvement is observed

Interaction

No specific drug interaction studies conducted with Dexamet

Contraindications

Injuries and ulcerating processes of the cornea, particularly bacteria or viral origin
Purulent infections of the conjunctiva and eyelids
Tuberculosis, mycosis, glaucoma

Side Effects

Reversible rise in intraocular pressure in predisposed patients
Regular pressure measurements are essential

Pregnancy & Lactation

Potential benefit justifying the potential risk to the fetus
Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies risk

Precautions & Warnings

Corticosteroids may mask, activate, or aggravate eye infections
Do not touch dropper tip to any surface
Seek alternative treatment if no improvement after a few days

Overdose Effects

Overdose through local or accidental oral administration is not likely

Storage Conditions

Store at room temperature
Protect from light
Use contents within one month after opening the bottle
