Indications

  • Allergic non-infectious blepharitis and conjunctivitis
  • Non-infectious keratitis
  • Inflammation of the anterior uvea
  • Scleritis
  • Post-operative management of cataract

Pharmacology

  • Dexamethasone is a cortisone derivative with high anti-inflammatory activity
  • Therapeutic concentrations found in cornea and aqueous humor
  • Inhibits phospholipase A2 and chemotactic infiltration of neutrophils

Dosage & Administration

  • Instill 1 drop into the conjunctival sac 3-5 times per day for ophthalmic solution
  • Apply a small amount into the conjunctival sac 3-4 times per day for ophthalmic ointment

Interaction

Specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted with Dexon

Contraindications

  • Injuries and ulcerating processes of the cornea
  • Purulent infections of the conjunctiva
  • Tuberculosis
  • Glaucoma

Side Effects

Application of corticosteroids may cause a reversible rise in intraocular pressure

Pregnancy & Lactation

Dexamethasone ophthalmic preparation should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Corticosteroids may mask, activate or aggravate an eye infection
  • Do not touch dropper tip to any surface

Overdose Effects

Overdose through local or accidental oral administration is not likely

Storage Conditions

  • Store at room temperature
  • Protect from light
  • Contents should not be used more than one month after first opening of the bottle
