Indications
- Treatment of allergic non-infectious blepharitis and conjunctivitis
- Treatment of non-infectious keratitis, punctate keratitis, disciform keratitis
- Treatment of inflammation of the anterior uvea (iritis, iridocyclitis)
- Treatment of scleritis, episcleritis, and myositis
- Post-operative management of cataract, strabismus & other ocular surgeries
Pharmacology
- Dexamethasone is a cortisone derivative with high activity
- Anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-exudative, and anti-proliferative properties
- Therapeutic concentrations found in both the cornea and aqueous humor
- Inhibition of phospholipase A2 and prostaglandin synthesis
- Inhibition of chemotactic infiltration of neutrophils into the site of inflammation
Dosage & Administration
- Instill 1 drop of dexamethasone ophthalmic solution into the conjunctival sac 3-5 times per day
- In acute cases, use up to 1 drop every hour if necessary
- Apply a small amount of dexamethasone ophthalmic ointment into the conjunctival sac 3-4 times per day
- Close eyes without blinking and keep them closed for 1 to 2 minutes after applying the ointment
- Minimize the dose when desired improvement is observed
Interaction
- Specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted with Steron
Contraindications
- Injuries and ulcerating processes of the cornea
- Purulent infections of the conjunctiva and eyelids
- Tuberculosis, mycosis, glaucoma
Side Effects
- Reversible rise in intraocular pressure in predisposed patients
- Regular pressure measurements are essential during prolonged use
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Animal experiments with dexamethasone have shown adverse effects on the fetus
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
Precautions & Warnings
- Corticosteroids may mask, activate, or aggravate an eye infection
- Consider alternative treatment if no improvement is seen after a few days of application
- Avoid touching dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination
Overdose Effects
- Overdose through local or accidental oral administration is not likely
Storage Conditions
- Store at room temperature and protect from light
- Do not use more than one month after first opening
