Dosage & Administration

Interaction

  • increase in the effect of anticoagulants
  • inhibition with Phenobarbital
  • reduced therapeutic efficacy with phenytoin

Contraindications

  • epithelial herpes simplex cornealis
  • fungal infections of the eye
  • glaucoma
  • myelosuppression
  • hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol & Dexamethasone

Side Effects

  • ocular burning or discomfort
  • stinging
  • redness
  • itching
  • photophobia
  • blurred vision
  • dryness
  • elevation of intraocular pressure
  • optic nerve damage
  • posterior subcapsular cataract formation

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • no adequate and well-controlled studies
  • use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies risk
  • caution when administered to a nursing mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • possibility of persistent fungal infections of the cornea
  • prolonged use may result in cataract formation
  • glaucoma with optic nerve damage
  • intraocular pressure monitoring
  • overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • discontinuation if new infections appear
