Description
- Denicol ophthalmic solution is used to treat various eye and ear conditions such as bacterial conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, otitis externa, and otitis media. It contains dexamethasone as an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic agent, and chloramphenicol as a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic.

RecommendedDosage
- Eye:
- Bacterial Conjunctivitis: 1-2 drops every 2 hours for 2 days, then 1-2 drops every 4 hours for the next 5 days
- Corneal Ulcers: 2 drops every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then 2 drops every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. Subsequently, 2 drops hourly on the second day, and every 4 hours from the 3rd to 14th day
- Ear: 2-3 drops every 2-3 hours initially, with frequency decrease as warranted by improvement in clinical signs
Pharmacology
- Dexamethasone: Anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic action
- Chloramphenicol: Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
Interaction
- Chloramphenicol absorption may increase the effect of anticoagulants
- Inhibition of Chloramphenicol action with Phenobarbital
- Reduced efficacy of Dexamethasone with concomitant administration of phenytoin, phenobarbitone, ephedrine, and rifampicin
Contraindications
- Epithelial herpes simplex cornealis, fungal, viral, tuberculous, and other eye infections
- Glaucoma
- Myelosuppression during previous exposure to Chloramphenicol
- Hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol and Dexamethasone Phosphate or any other ingredients
SideEffects
- Transient ocular burning or discomfort
- Stinging, redness, itching, conjunctivitis, foreign body sensation, photophobia, blurred vision, dryness, and eye pain
- Allergic sensitization with local use of Chloramphenicol
- Elevation of intraocular pressure, possible glaucoma, optic nerve damage, and posterior subcapsular cataract formation

Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Caution when administered to a nursing mother

- Consideration of persistent fungal infections of the cornea after prolonged corticosteroid dosing
- Monitor intraocular pressure during prolonged use of steroids
- Possible overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms with prolonged antibiotic use
- Discontinue if new infections appear and institute alternative therapy
