Indications

  • Steroid responsive inflammatory ocular conditions
  • Chronic anterior uveities
  • Corneal injury from chemical radiation or thermal burns
  • Penetration of foreign bodies

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal activity of Tobramycin
  • Inhibition of normal protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria
  • Inhibition of phospholipase A2 by Dexamethasone
  • Inhibition of chemo-tactic infiltration of neutrophils

Dosage & Administration

  • Eye Drops: 3-5 times per day
  • Increased dosage during initial 24 to 48 hours
  • Eye Ointment: 3-4 times per day
  • Pediatric use below the age of 2 years not established

Interaction

  • No specific interaction studies with Dexagen T eye drops
  • Interval of 10 minutes between successive applications when used with other topical ophthalmic medicines

Contraindications

  • Epithelial herpes simplex keratitis
  • Mycobacterial infection of the eye
  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication

  • Localized ocular toxicity
  • Elevation of intraocular pressure
  • Glaucoma development
  • Optic nerve damage
  • Posterior sub capsular cataract formation
  • Delayed wound healing

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited studies in pregnant women

  • Potential systemic absorption in human milk
  • Caution during nursing

Precautions & Warnings

  • Consideration of fungal infections of the cornea after long-term steroid dosing
  • Prolonged use leading to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Possibility of cross-sensitivity to other aminoglycoside antibiotics

Overdose Effects

  • No known local administration overdose
  • Measures to reduce resorption in case of accidental oral intake
  • No specific antidote
