Indications
- Treatment of steroid responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
- Treatment of steroid responsive inflammation of the cornea
- Treatment of steroid responsive inflammation of the anterior segment of the globe
Pharmacology
- Corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory action
- Induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins
- Control of biosynthesis of inflammatory mediators
- Lower propensity to increase intraocular pressure than Dexamethasone
Dosage & Administration
- Shake bottle before use
- 1 to 2 drops instilled into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
- Dosage may be increased to 2 drops every hour in initial 24 to 48 hours
- Children safety and effectiveness not demonstrated under 2 years of age
Interaction
- Specific drug interaction studies not conducted
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in acute superficial Herpes simplex keratitis
- Contraindicated in fungal diseases of ocular structures
- Contraindicated in vaccinia and varicella
- Contraindicated in mycobacterial infection of the eye
- Contraindicated in most other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Contraindicated in tuberculosis of the eye
- Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to the constituents of this medication

- Elevation of intraocular pressure with possible development of glaucoma
- Loss of visual acuity or defects in fields of vision
- Eye irritation
- Ocular hyperaemia
- Eye pain
- Visual disturbance
- Foreign body sensation
- Eyelid edema
- Blurred vision
- Eye discharge
- Eye pruritus
- Eye swelling
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
- Ulcerative keratitis
- Ocular infection (including bacterial, fungal, and viral)
- Punctate keratitis
- Hypersensitivity
- Rash
- Delayed wound healing
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B3
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Unknown systemic absorption into breast milk
- Decision to discontinue nursing or the drug to be made after considering the importance of the drug to the mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with a history of Herpes simplex keratitis
- Use for more than 10 days under strict supervision with regular checks for intraocular pressure
- May mask, activate, or aggravate an infection of the eye
- If no improvement is seen after a few days, consider alternative treatment
