Indications
- Treatment of steroid responsive inflammation of palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
- Treatment of steroid responsive inflammation of cornea
- Treatment of steroid responsive inflammation of anterior segment of the globe
Pharmacology
- Corticosteroid with excellent anti-inflammatory action
- Inhibition of release of inflammation mediators
- Lower propensity to increase intraocular pressure compared to Dexamethasone
Dosage & Administration
- Shake bottle before use
- 1 to 2 drops instilled into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
- Safety in children under 2 years not demonstrated
Interaction
- Specific drug interaction studies not conducted
Contraindications
- Acute superficial Herpes simplex keratitis
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures
- Vaccinia, varicella, mycobacterial infection of the eye
- Hypersensitivity to the constituents of this medication
Side Effects
- Elevation of intraocular pressure with possible development of glaucoma
- Loss of visual acuity or defects in fields of vision
- Eye irritation, ocular hyperemia, eye pain, visual disturbance
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation, ulcerative keratitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B3
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Not known whether ophthalmic use of corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Great caution required in patients with history of Herpes simplex keratitis
- Use for more than 10 days only under strict supervision with regular checks for intraocular pressure
