Indications

  • Treatment of steroid responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
  • Treatment of steroid responsive inflammation of the cornea
  • Treatment of steroid responsive inflammation of the anterior segment of the globe

Pharmacology

  • Corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory action
  • Induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins
  • Inhibition of prostaglandins and leukotrienes release
  • Lower propensity to increase intraocular pressure compared to Dexamethasone

Dosage & Administration

  • 1 to 2 drops instilled into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
  • Initial 24 to 48 hours dosage increase to 2 drops every hour
  • Use not demonstrated in children under 2 years of age

Interaction

  • Specific drug interaction studies not conducted

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in acute superficial Herpes simplex keratitis
  • Contraindicated in fungal diseases of ocular structures
  • Contraindicated in varicella and mycobacterial infection of the eye
  • Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to the constituents of this medication

  • Elevation of intraocular pressure
  • Loss of visual acuity or defects in fields of vision
  • Eye irritation
  • Ocular hyperaemia
  • Blurred vision
  • Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
  • Ocular infection
  • Punctate keratitis
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Delayed wound healing

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category B3
  • Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
  • Not known whether ophthalmic use of corticosteroids could result in systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution required in patients with history of Herpes simplex keratitis
  • Not to be used for more than 10 days without supervision
  • May mask, activate, or aggravate an eye infection
  • If no improvement seen, consider alternative treatment

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a dry place away from light
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Do not touch the dropper tip to prevent contamination
  • Tightly close the bottle when not in use
  • Do not use after 4 weeks of first opening
