Isolon 1% (Ophthalmic Suspension)

Indications

• Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
• Treatment of inflammation of the cornea and anterior segment of the globe

Pharmacology

• Inhibition of migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes
• Reversal of increased capillary permeability
• Suppression of the immune system by reducing the activity and production of lymphocytes and eosinophils

Dosage & Administration

• Adult dosage: Instill one drop into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
• Initial dosing frequency may be increased if necessary within the first 24 to 48 hours
• Care should be taken not to discontinue the therapy before completing the course
• Paediatric: Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established

Interaction

• No significant drug interactions reported

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
• Contraindicated in cases of known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of this preparation or other corticosteroids

Side Effects

• Elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) with possible development of glaucoma
• Infrequent optic nerve damage
• Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
• Delayed wound healing
• Fungal and viral infections of the cornea may develop with long-term applications of steroid

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy category C
• Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
• Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman as many drugs are excreted in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Shake the bottle well before use
• Prolonged use may result in damage to the optic nerve and defects in vision
• Routine monitoring of intraocular pressure recommended with prolonged use

Overdose Effects

• A one-time accidental overdose generally will not cause acute problems
• Long-term overdose may show general side-effects
• Sufficient water should be taken to dilute the medication in case of accidental overdose
