Indications
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
- Treatment of inflammation of the cornea and anterior segment of the globe
Pharmacology
- Prednisolone decreases inflammation by inhibiting migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes
- Reversal of increased capillary permeability
- Suppresses the immune system by reducing the activity and production of lymphocytes and eosinophils
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Instill one drop into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
- Pediatric safety and effectiveness not established
Interaction
- No significant reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- Contraindicated in other corticosteroids
Side Effects
- Elevation of intraocular pressure with possible glaucoma development
- Infrequent optic nerve damage
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
- Delayed wound healing
- Fungal and viral infections of the cornea may develop with long-term applications
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C
- Topical administration absorption in human milk is not known
- Caution with nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Shake the bottle well before use
- Prolonged use may result in damage to the optic nerve and defects in vision
- Routine monitoring of intraocular pressure when used for a longer period
Overdose Effects
- One-time accidental overdose generally will not cause acute problems
- Long time overdose may show general side effects
- Sufficient water should be taken to dilute the medication in accidental overdose
