Indications
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the cornea
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the anterior segment of the globe
Pharmacology
- Prednisolone decreases inflammation by inhibiting migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes
- Prednisolone decreases inflammation by reversing increased capillary permeability
- Suppression of the immune system by reducing the activity and production of lymphocytes and eosinophils
Dosage & Administration
- Adult: One drop into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
- Increased dosing frequency during initial 24 to 48 hours if necessary
- Care should be taken not to discontinue the therapy before completing the course
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to other corticosteroids
Side Effects
- Elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) with possible development of glaucoma
- Infrequent optic nerve damage
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
- Delayed wound healing
- Fungal and viral infections of the cornea may develop with long-term applications of steroid
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Shake the bottle well before use
- Prolonged use may result in damage to the optic nerve
- Prolonged use may result in defects in vision
- Routine monitoring of intraocular pressure is recommended for prolonged use
Overdose Effects
- One-time accidental overdose generally will not cause acute problems
- Long-term overdose may result in general side-effects
- Sufficient water should be taken to dilute the medication in case of accidental overdose
