Indications
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the cornea
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the anterior segment of the globe
Pharmacology
- Decreases inflammation by inhibiting migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes
- Reversal of increased capillary permeability
- Suppresses the immune system by reducing the activity and production of the lymphocytes and eosinophils
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Instill one drop into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
- Initial 24 to 48 hours, dosing frequency may be increased if necessary
- Do not discontinue therapy before completing the course
- Paediatric: Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to other corticosteroids
Side Effects
- Elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) with possible development of glaucoma
- Infrequent optic nerve damage
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
- Delayed wound healing
- Fungal and viral infections of the cornea with long-term applications
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C: Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Unknown systemic absorption resulting in human milk
- Caution when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Shake the bottle well before use
- Prolonged use may result in damage to the optic nerve
- Prolonged use may result in defects in vision
- Routinely monitor intraocular pressure
Overdose Effects
- Accidental overdose generally won't cause acute problems
- Long-time overdose may show general side-effects
- In case of overdose, dilute the medication with sufficient water
