Description

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult: one drop into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
  • Dosing frequency may be increased during initial 24 to 48 hours if necessary

Pharmacology

  • Prednisolone decreases inflammation by inhibiting migration of leukocytes

  • Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva

Contraindications

  • Viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
  • Known hypersensitivity to any ingredients of the preparation

Side Effects

  • Elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP)
  • Possible development of glaucoma
  • Infrequent optic nerve damage
  • Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Fungal and viral infections of the cornea with long-term applications of the steroid

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy category C
  • Usage during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Unknown systemic absorption into human milk
  • Caution during administration to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Shake the bottle well before use
  • Prolonged use may result in damage to the optic nerve and defects in vision
  • Routine monitoring of intraocular pressure during longer periods of use

Overdose Effects

  • A one-time accidental overdose generally will not cause acute problems
  • Long time overdose may show general side-effects
  • Sufficient water should be taken in accidental overdose to dilute the medication
