Alarid 0.025% (Ophthalmic Solution)

Indications

• Treatment of signs & symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis
• Treatment of vernal kerato-conjunctivitis
• Treatment of blepharitis
• Treatment of giant papillary conjunctivitis

Pharmacology

• Potent anti-allergic substance
• Non-competitive histamine (H1) receptor blocking property
• Inhibition of release of mediators from cells responsible for allergic reactions
• Stabilizes mast cells
• Decreases chemotaxis of eosinophils

Dosage & Administration

• 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily for adults and children 3 years and older
• Consult with a doctor for children under 3 years of age

Interaction

• Interval of at least 5 minutes required when used concomitantly with other eye medications

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to Ketotifen or any of the components

Side Effects

• Burning
• Stinging
• Punctate corneal epithelial erosion
• Blurring of vision upon drug instillation
• Dry eyes
• Eyelid disorder
• Conjunctivitis
• Eye pain
• Photophobia
• Subconjunctival haemorrhage

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Caution required when prescribing to pregnant women
• Topical administration to humans unlikely to produce detectable quantities in breast milk
• Ketotifen 0.25% eye drops can be used during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

• Contains benzalkonium chloride as a preservative
• Should not be instilled while wearing contact lenses
• Lenses should be removed before application
• Not reinserted earlier than 15 minutes after use

Overdose Effects

• No reported cases of overdose
• Oral ingestion equivalent to 60% of a recommended oral daily dose for a 3 years old child
• No serious signs or symptoms observed after oral ingestion of up to 20 mg

Storage Conditions

• Store in a cool and dry place protected from light and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface
• Do not use after 30 days of first opening
