Indications

Pharmacology

  • Potent anti-allergic substance
  • Non-competitive histamine (H1) receptor blocking property
  • Inhibits release of mediators (e.g. histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins)
  • Stabilizes mast cells
  • Decreases chemotaxis
  • Decreases activation of degranulation of eosinophils

Dosage & Administration

  • 1 drop in affected eye(s) twice daily
  • 8-12 hours interval between doses
  • Not more than twice per day
  • Consult doctor for children under 3 years

Interaction

  • Interval of at least 5 minutes with other eye medications

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ketotifen or any components

  • Blurring of vision upon drug instillation
  • Dry eyes
  • Eyelid disorder
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Eye pain
  • Photophobia
  • Subconjunctival haemorrhage

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Caution in pregnant women
  • Low systemic levels after ocular administration
  • Systemic excretion into breast milk unlikely after topical administration
  • Usable during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Contains benzalkonium chloride as a preservative
  • Avoid instilling while wearing soft contact lenses
  • Remove lenses before applying drops
  • Reinsert lenses no earlier than 15 minutes after use

Overdose Effects

  • No reported overdose cases
  • Oral ingestion equivalent to 60% of recommended oral daily dose for a 3-year-old child
  • No serious signs or symptoms after oral ingestion of up to 20 mg
