Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Alleviating complications of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergy such as hayfever and urticaria
Pharmacology
Ketotifen has anti-allergic and antihistamine properties, effective in preventing asthmatic attacks, with sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 1 mg twice daily with food, can be increased to 2 mg in severe cases
- Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food, starting with 0.5 to 1 mg for easily sedated patients
- Use in elderly: Same as adult dose or as advised by the physician
Interaction
May potentiate effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols. Reversible fall in platelet count observed with concomitant use of oral antidiabetic agents.
Contraindications
Avoid concomitant use with oral antidiabetic agents, no recommendations for use in pregnancy or when breastfeeding.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to lack of evidence of teratogenic effects.
Precautions & Warnings
- Continue previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting to avoid exacerbation of asthma
- Take precautions during the first day of treatment as reactions may be impaired
- Avoid alcoholic drinks and potentiated effects of sedatives, hypnotics, and antihistamines
