Indications

Pharmacology

Ketotifen has anti-allergic properties similar to sodium chromoglycate for the prophylactic treatment of asthma. It also acts as an antihistamine and possesses marked anti-anaphylactic properties. It exerts a sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions and prevents asthmatic attacks. Ketotifen has been found effective in reducing the number, severity, and duration of asthma attacks.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 1 mg twice daily with food, may increase to 2 mg twice daily in severe cases. Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food. Elderly: Same as adult dose or as advised by the physician.

Interaction

Potentiates the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols. A reversible fall in platelet count may occur in some patients receiving Ketotifen concomitantly with oral antidiabetic agents.

Contraindications

Avoid concomitant use with oral antidiabetic agents. No recommendations for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Side Effects

Drowsiness, dry mouth, and slight dizziness may occur at the beginning of treatment but usually disappear after a few days.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation due to lack of evidence of teratogenic effects.

Precautions & Warnings

Continuation of previous treatment for a minimum of two weeks after starting Ketotifen is important to avoid exacerbation of asthma. Patients should be warned not to operate vehicles or machinery on the first day of treatment. Avoid alcoholic drinks. Potentiates the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol.

Overdose Effects

Reported features of overdosage include confusion, drowsiness, headache, bradycardia, and respiratory depression. Gastric lavage or emesis for elimination of the drug is recommended, with general supportive treatment as needed.
