Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Alleviating complications of itching, pain and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergy such as hayfever and urticaria
Pharmacology
- Anti-allergic properties
- Properties of an antihistamine
- Anti-anaphylactic properties
- Sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions
- Prophylactic activity takes several weeks to become fully established
- Reduction of corticosteroids and/or bronchodilators in some cases
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 mg twice daily with food, up to 2 mg twice daily in severe cases
- Children (above 3 years) dosage: 1 mg twice daily with food, with lower initial dose for sedation-prone patients
- Same dosage for elderly as for adults or as advised by the physician
Interaction
- Potentiation of effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols
- Reversible fall in platelet count when taken with oral antidiabetic agents
Contraindications
- Avoidance of combination with oral antidiabetic agents
- Lack of evidence for teratogenic effects but not recommended in pregnancy or when breastfeeding
Side Effects
- Temporary drowsiness
- Isolated cases of dry mouth and slight dizziness at the beginning of treatment

- Lack of evidence for teratogenic effects, but not recommended in pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Continuation of previous treatment for at least two weeks after starting Ticofen to avoid exacerbation of asthma
- Advised not to operate vehicles or machinery on the first day of treatment
- Avoidance of alcoholic drinks
- Potentiation of effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol
Overdose Effects
- Possible features of overdose include confusion, drowsiness, headache, bradycardia, and respiratory depression
- Recommendation for gastric lavage or emesis if overdose occurs
