Indications
- Acute and chronic non-infectious conjunctivitis
- Nonspecific conjunctival irritation
- Irrigation of the tear ducts
Pharmacology
- Astringent effect of zinc ions
- Tissue-sealing effect of zinc ions
- Antiseptic effect of zinc ions
- Vasoconstrictive effect of Naphazoline
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 drop in the conjunctival sac, three to 4 times per day
- Caution in children's dosage of vasoconstrictors
Interaction
- Avoid use with MAO-blockers
- Potential interaction with tricyclic antidepressants
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to zinc sulphate, Naphazoline, and other ingredients
- Contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma
- Contraindicated in patients with dry eye or keratoconjunctivitis sicca Sjogren's syndrome
- Not suitable for use in infants
Side Effects
- Mydriasis
- Slight increase of intraocular pressure
- Transient burning sensation after instillation
- Reactive redness of the eye (rebound effect)
- Possible systemic cardiovascular effects in rare cases
- Nonspecific fatigue in some patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No controlled animal or pregnant women studies available
- Effects during lactation not investigated
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid uncontrolled use over extended periods
- Discontinue treatment if no improvement after 2 days
- Discontinue therapy if ocular discomfort or visual disturbance occurs
- Caution in patients with predisposition to glaucoma, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, pheochromocytoma, aneurysm, hyperglycemia, and hyperthyroidism
