Indications
- Acute non-infectious conjunctivitis
- Chronic non-infectious conjunctivitis
- Nonspecific conjunctival irritation
- Post-treatment of bacterial and viral conjunctivitis
- Irrigation of tear ducts
Pharmacology
- Active compounds of zinc sulphate and zinc ions
- Astringent effect
- Antiseptic effect
- Naphazoline's ability to constrict blood vessels
- Reduction of inflammation and swelling of the conjunctiva
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 drop in the conjunctival sac, 3-4 times per day
- Caution in dosage for children
- Importance of low dosage for vasoconstrictors in children
Interaction
- Contraindication with MAO-blockers
- Enhanced effects with concomitant use of tricyclic antidepressants
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to zinc sulphate, Naphazoline, and other ingredients
- Contraindicated in narrow-angle glaucoma patients
- Contraindicated in dry eye and keratoconjunctivitis sicca patients
- Not to be used in infants
Side Effects
- Mydriasis
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Burning sensation after instillation
- Rebound redness of the eye after long-term use
- Rare cases of systemic cardiovascular effects
- Nonspecific fatigue
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Unknown effects in pregnancy due to lack of controlled studies
- Lack of investigation into effects during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid uncontrolled use over extended periods
- Discontinue treatment if no improvement after 2 days
- Discontinue if ocular discomfort or visual disturbance occurs
- Caution in patients with predisposition to glaucoma
- Caution in hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, pheochromocytoma, aneurysm, hyperglycemia, and hyperthyroidism
