Indications
- Mydriatic and cycloplegic agent
Pharmacology
- Homatropine as a tertiary amine antimuscarinic
- Produces dilation and loss of accommodation
- Blocks the response of iris sphincter muscle and accommodative ciliary muscle
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Instill 1 or 2 drops of 2% or 5% solution
- Child dosage: Instill 1 drop of 2% solution
- Repeat at 5-10 minute intervals if necessary
Interaction
- Increased effects with antimuscarinic drugs
- Interacts with antihistamines, phenothiazines, antipsychotics, TCAs, and MAOIs
Contraindications
- Closed-angle glaucoma
- Narrow angle between iris and cornea
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity may cause conjunctivitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
- Caution during lactation, as excretion in human milk is unknown
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with prostatic enlargement
- Use with caution in patients suffering from paralytic ileus or pyloric stenosis
Use in Special Populations
- Not for use in children below the age of 3 months
Overdose Effects
- Ataxia
- Incoherent speech
- Restlessness
- Hallucinations
- Disorientation
- Failure to recognize people
- Tachycardia
- Psychotic reactions and behavioral disturbances in children
- Treatment with Physostigmine salicylate or short-acting barbiturate
