Dilate 1% (Ophthalmic Solution)

Indications

• Dilates pupil for eye examinations
• Used before and after eye surgery

Pharmacology

• Induces mydriasis and cycloplegia
• Acts by blocking the parasympathetic nervous system
• Competes with acetylcholine for uptake at receptor sites
• Results in mydriasis and cycloplegia
• Rapid onset of effect
• Maximum diameter of pupil reached after 20-25 minutes
• Returns to normal size within approx. 6 hours

Dosage & Administration

• For refraction: instill 1 or 2 drops in the eye(s)
• Repeated in 5 minutes if necessary
• Additional drop may be instilled if patient is not seen within 20 to 30 minutes
• For examination of the fundus: instill 1 drop 15 to 20 minutes prior to examination

Interaction

• Reinforced effect when taken with atropine-like substances
• Interaction with tricyclic antidepressants, H1 antihistaminic substances, anti-cholinergic agents, anti-Parkinson drugs, phenothiazines, neuroleptic drugs

Contraindications

• Narrow angle glaucoma
• Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Side Effects

• Slight burning sensation after instillation
• Psychotic episodes, behavioral changes, and cardio-respiratory collapse in children
• Impairs performance and responsiveness while driving or operating machinery
• Increase in intraocular pressure
• Allergic reaction
• Dryness of the mouth
• Tachycardia
• Headache

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category C
• Use in pregnant women only if clearly needed
• Caution when administered to nursing women due to potential excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Consider administration of antidote (miotic) after examination
• Patient should compress the tear duct of the treated eye for 2-3 minutes after instillation to reduce excessive systemic absorption
• Use in older patients with care

Overdose Effects

• Red face
• Accelerated pulse
• Dry mouth
• Reduced sweating and secretion
• Increase in body temperature
• Emergency contact for accidental ingestion

Therapeutic Class

Storage Conditions

• Store at room temperature
• Protect from light
• Contents should not be used more than one month after first opening
