Eyetrop 1% (Ophthalmic Solution)

Indications

• Dilates pupil for eye examinations
• Used before and after eye surgery

Pharmacology

• Induces mydriasis and cycloplegia
• Blocks parasympathetic nervous system
• Competes with acetylcholine for uptake
• Rapid onset of effect
• Maximum diameter after 20-25 minutes

Dosage & Administration

• Instill 1 or 2 drops for refraction
• Instill 1 drop for examination of the fundus

Interaction

• Can be reinforced by atropine like substances
• Interacts with tricyclic antidepressants
• Reacts with anti-cholinergic agents

Contraindications

• Narrow angle glaucoma
• Hypersensitivity to any component

Side Effects

• May cause slight burning sensation
• Psychotic episodes in children
• Behavioral changes in children
• Impairs performance and responsiveness
• Increase in intraocular pressure
• Allergic reaction
• Dryness of the mouth
• Tachycardia
• Headache

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category C
• Use in pregnant women only if clearly needed
• Caution when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

• Consider administration of antidote (miotic)
• Patient should compress tear duct after instillation
• Use with caution in older patients

Overdose Effects

• Red face
• Accelerated pulse
• Dry mouth
• Reduced sweating and secretion
• Increase in body temperature
• Contact emergency doctor
• Administration of miotic agent

Therapeutic Class

Storage Conditions

• Store at room temperature
• Protect from light
• Use within one month after opening
