Indications
- Used to dilate the pupil for eye examinations
- Used before and after eye surgery
Pharmacology
- Induces mydriasis and cycloplegia
- Blocks parasympathetic nervous system
- Competes with acetylcholine for uptake at receptor sites
Dosage & Administration
- Instill 1 or 2 drops for refraction
- Instill 1 drop 15 to 20 minutes prior to fundus examination
Interaction
- Reinforced effect with atropine-like substances
- Potential interactions with tricyclic antidepressants and anti-cholinergic agents
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in narrow angle glaucoma
- Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to any component
Side Effects
- Mild burning sensation after instillation
- Potential psychotic episodes and behavioral changes in children
- Impairs performance and responsiveness while driving or operating machinery
