Indications

Used for dilating the pupil for eye examinations
Used before and after eye surgery

Pharmacology

Induces mydriasis and cycloplegia
Acts by blocking the action of the parasympathetic nervous system
Competes with acetylcholine for uptake at the receptor sites

Dosage and Administration

1 or 2 drops for refraction, repeated in 5 minutes
1 drop 15 to 20 minutes prior to fundus examination

Interaction

Atropine like substances can reinforce its effect
Interaction with tricyclic antidepressants, H1 antihistaminic substances, anti-cholinergic agents, anti-Parkinson drugs, phenothiazines, neuroleptic drugs

Contraindications

Narrow angle glaucoma
Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Side Effects

Burning sensation
Psychotic episodes, behavioral changes, cardio-respiratory collapse in children
Impaired performance and responsiveness while driving or operating machinery
Increase in intraocular pressure, allergic reaction, dry mouth, tachycardia, headache

Pregnancy and Lactation

Pregnancy category C
Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy
Caution during nursing due to potential excretion in human milk

Precautions and Warnings

Consider administration of an antidote (miotic) after examination
Patient should compress tear duct of treated eye immediately after instillation to reduce systemic absorption
Careful use in older patients

Overdose Effects

Red face, accelerated pulse, dry mouth, reduced sweating, increased body temperature
Contact emergency doctor in case of accidental ingestion
