Indications

  • Dilates pupil for eye examinations
  • Used before and after eye surgery

Pharmacology

  • Induces mydriasis and cycloplegia
  • Acts by blocking the parasympathetic nervous system
  • Rapid onset of effect
  • Returns to normal size within 6 hours

Dosage & Administration

  • Instill 1 or 2 drops for refraction
  • Instill 1 drop 15 to 20 minutes prior to examination of the fundus

Interaction

  • Reinforced by atropine like substances
  • Capable of reinforcement by tricyclic antidepressants
  • Capable of reinforcement by anti-cholinergic agents

Contraindications

  • Narrow angle glaucoma
  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Side Effects

  • Slight burning sensation
  • Psychotic episodes in children
  • Increased intraocular pressure
  • Allergic reaction
  • Dryness of the mouth
  • Tachycardia
  • Headache

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Category C drug
  • Caution needed for nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Consider administration of an antidote (miotic)
  • Patient should compress the tear duct of the treated eye after instillation
  • Use with care in older patients

  • Red face
  • Accelerated pulse
  • Dry mouth
  • Increase in body temperature
