Indications
- Dilates the pupil for eye examinations
- Used before cycloplegic refraction
- Used before and after eye surgery
Pharmacology
- Induces mydriasis and cycloplegia
- Acts by blocking the parasympathetic nervous system
- Competes with acetylcholine for uptake at the receptor sites
Dosage & Administration
- 1-2 drops for refraction, repeated in 5 minutes
- Additional drop may be instilled for prolonged mydriatic effect
- 1 drop 15-20 minutes prior to examination of the fundus
Interaction
- Capable of reinforcing effects when taken with atropine-like substances
- Reinforced effects when taken with tricyclic antidepressants
- Reinforced effects when taken with anti-cholinergic agents
Contraindications
- Narrow angle glaucoma
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Slight burning sensation after instillation
- Psychotic episodes and behavioral changes in children
- Impairs performance and responsiveness while driving or operating machinery
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Consider administration of an antidote (miotic) after examination
- Patient should compress the tear duct of the treated eye for 2-3 minutes after instillation
Overdose Effects
- Red face and accelerated pulse
- Dry mouth and increased body temperature
- Emergency doctor should be contacted in case of accidental ingestion
